Tasks:
To end last weeks class, we were all given a slide to create a slideshow that we would be presenting to a class. This slideshow was to inform and teach students what animals we could potentially see on our adventure. I chose to write about the Bufflehead. So this week, we were given the opportunity to visit a Grade 2 class at Gordon Terrace Elementary School. We were put into partners as teacher candidates and we were paired up with two students to form a group of 4. As a grouping, we walked the students to Elizabeth Lake where we did a project based on the children’s book “Leaf Man”.
Our task was to create an animal out of leaves just like in the story itself, rather than a person. Our group chose to create a snake with varying colours of leaves, I hope to get a hold of a picture of it soon. If I get it I will edit this post add it below this paragraph!
Connections:
During this walk and project, we were able to connect with the students in a one on one kind of way where we learned about them and their hobbies, likes and dislikes, and how to communicate as educators towards students. This lesson provided every student with an exercise as we got to walk and enjoy the last bits of sunny weather. We were also able to connect the slideshow and project to incorporating the first peoples language and gratitude, which is a very important piece to involve when possible.
Technology Component:
It amazes me every time to see how tech savvy students are. From working the iPads to making posts on seesaw through the links so fast. They have been taught well and have picked it up quickly and can also help each other and show us how to maneuver through certain apps and resources.
Summary:
This was a great experience for me in many ways. The first being that the room we were invited to was my old third grade class and it was so cool to be back not only in the building but in the room with a different lens and perspective. And then the entire lesson and day itself went so smoothly and was lots of fun to see students playing and enjoying learning. I believe everyone should be able to play and take a page out of a child’s way to just have fun and make learning experiences great. We can learn just as much from students as we teach as educators.
Upcoming Week:
Next week we will be heading up to Kootenay Orchards Elementary School to the SD5 design lab! I am very excited to see all the lab components and play and learn with everything as we go, while sharing it you readers! Talk to you next week!
